A young Ilocos Norte student has brought pride to the Philippines after emerging as champion in the Senior Secondary category of the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad. Ashley Cassandra Rasos, a Grade 11 student of Sarrat National High School, topped her division against students from different countries.

She competed in the category covering Levels 10, 11, and 12 and represented the Philippines in the international competition. Her victory gave Sarrat National High School another reason to celebrate its growing reputation in mathematics competitions. The achievement also shows how Filipino students can compete and excel on the international academic stage.

Who Is Ashley Cassandra Rasos?

Ashley Cassandra Rasos is a Grade 11 student from Sarrat National High School in Ilocos Norte. She represented the Philippines in the Senior Secondary category of the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad. The category included students from Levels 10, 11, and 12, putting Rasos against competitors from different countries. Despite the level of competition, she emerged as the champion of her division.

A Champion From Sarrat National High School

Rasos’ victory also brought international recognition to Sarrat National High School. The school has produced students who have performed strongly in mathematics competitions, including other representatives who joined the same event. Her win adds another international achievement to the school’s growing list of academic accomplishments. It also highlights the opportunities available to students who develop their skills in mathematics at a young age. For Rasos, the competition became an opportunity to represent both her school and the Philippines.

Other Sarrat Students Also Earned Awards

Rasos was not the only student from Sarrat National High School who received recognition in the competition. Kurt Arjan Palalay and Immanuel Gamayo competed in the Secondary 1 category, with Gamayo receiving a Merit Award. Clark Kent Malaqui and Patrick Jirah Cabasaan competed in Secondary 2, where they earned Bronze Awards. Except for Cabasaan, the Sarrat representatives were first-time participants in the competition. Their results made the international event an especially notable achievement for the school.

Ilocos Norte’s Strong Math Competition Record

Rasos’ achievement is part of a broader record of strong performances by students from Ilocos Norte in international mathematics competitions. In 2024, Sarrat National High School student Brian Jansen Vallejo was recognized as a World Champion in the World International Mathematical Olympiad in the Secondary 1 category.

The Philippine Senate later cited Vallejo and other Filipino students who won awards at the competition. Another Sarrat graduate, Ma. Cassandra Reich Duque, became a WIMO World Champion and later received a full scholarship to the Chinese University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen. These achievements show that the province has produced students capable of competing at a high level in international mathematics. Rasos’ latest victory adds another impressive chapter to that record.

Why Her Victory Matters

The achievement of the Ilocos Norte student is more than just a personal academic victory. It demonstrates the ability of Filipino students to compete with young mathematicians from other countries. International competitions also give students opportunities to test their problem-solving skills against challenging mathematics problems.

Success in these events can help raise the profile of Philippine schools and encourage more students to pursue mathematics and science. Rasos’ achievement may also inspire other young Filipinos to see academic competitions as opportunities to represent the country.

A Proud Moment for the Philippines

Ashley Cassandra Rasos’ championship gives Filipinos another reason to celebrate young talent in the country. Coming from Sarrat National High School, she demonstrated that world-class academic achievements are not limited to students from major urban centers.

Her success also puts attention on Ilocos Norte and the students and educators developing mathematics talent in the province. Together with the achievements of her fellow Sarrat representatives, the result reflects the potential of Filipino students in international competitions. For many Filipinos, the story of this Ilocos Norte student is a reminder that talent can come from anywhere.

Making the Country Proud

Ashley Cassandra Rasos has made her school, province, and country proud after becoming champion of the Senior Secondary category at the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad. Her achievement came alongside awards earned by several other students from Sarrat National High School.

With the guidance of coach Michael Malvar, the delegation successfully represented the Philippines in an international mathematics competition. Rasos’ victory also continues a growing tradition of strong mathematics performances from students in Ilocos Norte. The story of this Ilocos Norte student proves that Filipino youth can make their mark on the world stage through talent, preparation, and determination.

A Filipina-led advocacy group seeking to educate the Filipino youth on how to address hunger and improve the nation’s food security recently made waves abroad after being recognized by two international organizations, including a unit of the United Nations.

Youth Uprising, led by 24-year-old Robyn Mijares, was awarded with a Special Mention by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its Champion Award category.

The FAO said it recognized the non-profit organization for its “intense engagement of young people in transforming agrifood systems.” The recognition was made during the week-long 44th FAO Ministerial Conference in Rome last June 28 to July 4.

The Champion Award is considered as the highest honor given by the FAO to its member-states, institutions or individuals whose actions have contributed in improving food security.

This year, the FAO conferred the Champion Award to Colombia’s Confederación Mesa Nacional de Pesca Artesanal de Colombia for its efforts in championing social protection measures for fishers and playing a key role in drafting laws against illegal fishing.

“These awardees remind us that transformation is already happening and must accelerate. Let us continue working hand in hand for the transformation of global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable,” FAO director general Qu Dongyu said.

Mijares was also recently recognized as one of the young global innovators in agriculture this year by the prestigious World Food Prize Foundation.

Mijares, along with 38 other individuals which include scientists, farmers, policy advisors, entrepreneurs and humanitarians across 27 countries, was named to the 2025 Top Agrifood Pioneers (TAP) list by the foundation.

The awardees will be formally recognized by the World Food Prize Foundation at the 2025 Borlaug Dialogue in Iowa, US in October.

She is the lone awardee from the Philippines in this year’s TAP list. Mijares is also the second Filipina to be named to the TAP list by the World Food Prize Foundation since it was launched last year.

The foundation recognized Mijares’ efforts in “empowering” Filipino youth “to lead the fight against hunger through sustainable agriculture and education.”

“Her innovative model blends education, sustainability and youth empowerment making her a transformative force in food systems and a compelling candidate for the TAP recognition,” the World Food Prize Foundation said.

Mijares is the founder and CEO of Youth Uprising and Grow School Philippines that provides public school students with holistic and accessible agricultural and environmental education.

Mijares said she could not believe that what started as a school paper in her high school turned out to be an internationally acclaimed organization and a “vision” for the entire country.

The recognition by the two international bodies of Grow School’s mission of ensuring that Filipino youth will never go hungry is both “groundbreaking” and “powerful,” Mijares said.

“This moment does not feel like a personal achievement. It feels like a shared victory – for the Philippines and for the thousands of Filipino public school youth who have become a testament to what’s possible when young people are mobilized to lead our agriculture and farming sectors,” Mijares told The STAR.

Mijares said she remains committed to expanding the reach of her organization and works to more young people to drive change that creates long-term, lasting impact toward sustainable and innovative food systems.

“I hope to continue making my fellow Filipinos proud and to keep uplifting more youth, not just to feed themselves, but to have the deep desire to feed others as well,” she said.

“To revolutionizing agriculture in the Philippines — one school at a time, one student at a time,” Mijares added.

Grow School, which is considered as the country’s first bamboo-built, solar-powered farm school, has trained over 98,000 students across 42 public schools nationwide about climate-smart agriculture, agriculture technology and food security.

The farm school takes an “innovative” hands-on approach in teaching the students on how to address the country’s food system woes that is both “fun” and “engaging” for the youth.

The non-profit organization’s efforts are focused on achieving the sustainable development goals particularly zero hunger, sustainable cities, quality education and climate action.

Lionel Dabbadie, FAO representative in the Philippines, said the awards received by Mijares and her organization are “powerful” tools to inspire, connect and mobilize action toward achieving food security and nutrition.

Dabbadie shared that Mijares’ works were unknown to him when she sought his endorsement for the FAO Champion Award.

“I took the time to carefully review her work and I was immediately struck by the strength and potential of her initiative,” Dabbadie told The STAR.

The FAO official described Grow School as a “movement” that has the capacity to “reshape” Philippine agriculture as a “space of innovation, empowerment and relevance” for the Filipino youth. Unfortunately, Dabbadie said, agriculture is “too often” perceived as “outdated” or “unattractive” today.

“That is why Robyn’s recognition is so meaningful: it offers a new narrative. It shows that agriculture can be modern, meaningful, and deeply rewarding for the younger generation,” he said.

TUGUEGARAO — Twenty-four-year-old Valerie Joy Agustin has brought pride to her hometown, the capital city of Cagayan province, by graduating summa cum laude with a double degree in political science and accounting at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Hawaii.

Her journey to glory unwittingly began at age 6, when she won in an academic competition. "At first, I didn't even know it was a competition — I just thought I was reviewing math problems," she was quoted in a BYU publication. "I won the competition and people started expecting me to be good at everything — not just [in] math, but [also in] English, science, everything. And suddenly, it wasn't just about learning anymore. It was about being the best."

Valerie said she drew strength from a family rooted in public service, faith and quiet determination. Her father is a government employee, and her mother is a homemaker who engaged in a small business while raising six children, of whom Valerie is the eldest. She refers to her mom as "the soul of our home."

Budding leader

In high school at the University of Saint Louis-Tuguegarao (USLT), she was a scholar and budding leader. She was elected president of the Supreme Student Council after previously serving as treasurer and NEO LMS (learning management system) ambassador — through which she helped fellow students transition to digital learning platforms at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

She finished senior high school in 2018 with honors in the Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand, despite her being in the science curriculum.

By the time she entered BYU–Hawaii on a scholarship, Valerie's leadership skills were further honed.

She was elected president of the Professional Accounting Society, where she doubled membership and organized career-building activities, including networking events with global firms like KPMG (Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler), one of the "Big Four" audit, tax advisory, and consulting firms in the world.

Time management

While pursuing her double major, she practiced time management by working as an undergraduate research assistant in the Faculty of Business and Government.

She was also a political science peer mentor, helping fellow students refine their research work, clarify academic goals, and navigate the rigors of university life.

Her own research paper on high-technology exports and political stability won first place in the political science category at BYU's Undergraduate Research Conference.

She likewise had the energy to join BYU's Polynesian Cultural Center, immersing in diverse cultures and honing her interpersonal and professional skills, and learning about cultural diplomacy.

Outside the campus, Valerie was selected as a Fellow of the Ayala Young Leaders Congress (AYLC), one of the most prestigious student leadership summits in the Philippines, where she sharpened her advocacy in nation-building, sustainability and youth empowerment.

She was likewise an Official Delegate of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Business Leadership Program, where she underwent training in business ethics, corporate governance and strategic leadership.

Valerie's interest in religious liberty, global justice, and diplomacy brought her to the Religious Freedom Annual Review in Utah in the United States, and earned her a slot as a Fellow of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society. She attended forums with international legal scholars and faith leaders.

"The fellowship broadened my perspective on constitutional rights, interfaith dialogue, and the global challenges of justice and inclusion," she said.

Full circle

Everything came full circle when her alma mater, USL-Tuguegarao, recently honored her as a model of youth leadership and academic excellence.

"Everything I do is a reflection of the people who raised me and the communities that molded me," Valerie said. "My dream is to serve, not just through titles or accolades, but by building systems and policies that empower people and promote justice."

She wants to pursue graduate studies in accounting taxation, law and international affairs. Her goal is to become an advocate for inclusive policy, social justice and ethical governance.

Inspired by her parents' example and empowered by her education, she envisions herself shaping policies and legal frameworks that uplift communities and promote peace.

Pinoy JRU student earns recognition at AMWUN in Malaysia

JRU student recognized at Asia World Model United Nations X in Malaysia

MARIEL CELINE SERQUIÑA
GMA Integrated News
27 February 2025

A computer engineering student from Jose Rizal University has earned the “Best Introduction Video” award at the latest Asia World Model United Nations (AWMUN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The AWMUN is a youth international conference where delegates can converse about current global issues.

With the theme “Navigating the Future: Shaping Our Role in the 5th Industrial Revolution,” the AWMUN X ran from February 14 to 17.

JRU's Albosran Gandawali, a third-year student of computer engineering, was one of 52 Filipinos that participated in the AWMUN X, which had 238 delegates from 27 countries.

“As a student leader, I aspire to inspire others by encouraging them to pursue their dreams fearlessly,” Gandawali said in his introduction video.

Gandawali became a member of their department’s student council and is currently an editor in their school newspaper. He also plans to become a lawyer.

“I truly believe that this program will equip me with valuable experiences that I can bring back to my community and make a positive impact on my society,” he added.

'Surreal, great opportunity'

Talking to GMA News Online, Gandawali shared that he had a “great experience'' at AWMUN X.

Gandawali also said that he felt nervous during the conference since it was also his first time going out of the country alone.

“I was so nervous, and I felt all the emotions, but I really focused on things that I could gain instead of focusing on what I really felt and being nervous about it,” he said.

“And it's really a surreal and a great opportunity for me to really build myself in communication and other things,” he added.

Gandawali also participated in the discussion on “Electric Vehicles and Lithium Waste: A Double-Edged Sword,” representing Colombia on the UN Environment Programme Governing Council.

“We were given one minute to speak about our country, what they have done for mitigating the [risk of using] lithium-ion batteries, what else they can do in the future, and how they can collaborate with the United Nations to further that proposed solution for this current issue,” Gandawali said.

After their presentation, the delegates debated the draft resolutions they had come up with. To decide which resolution will be passed, it must gain the support of at least one-third of all members.

“But we got fewer votes for the draft resolution. Nonetheless, the committees and chairs will look into it so that they can be able to really find the common grounds of both draft resolutions so that they can be able to do something on it,” Gandawali said.

For those aspiring to join international conferences, Gandawali advised the youth to take courage and “dare to live your dreams.”

“So just really pursue your dreams and always be thankful,” Gandawali said. — VBL, GMA Integrated News

ZAGREB, 18 February 2025. (Hina/CW) – Performing in a 105-year-old traditional folk costume from the Croatian region of Međimurje, 13-year-old Chriztel Renae Aceveda stole the show at president’s inauguration on Tuesday in Zagreb.

Chriztel sang a moving rendition of the folk song “Dej mi Boze oči sokolove” at the inauguration of President Zoran Milanović.

“I am very satisfied. This is really a feeling that I cannot describe at all,” said Chriztel, before adding.

“It’s a beautiful feeling to be in front of a lot of important people and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to sing in front of everyone”.

She thanked President Milanović for the invitation and said that it was an honour to perform and meet him.

The 13-year-old, who was born in the Philippines, has become a household name in Croatia after winning Supertalent in 2023.

Her victory not only captured the hearts of viewers but also marked her as the youngest winner of the popular talent show.

Raised in Angeles City, Chriztel spent much of her childhood singing karaoke with her mother. In 2020, her life took a significant turn when her mother married a Croatian from Međimurje.

The family relocated to the village of Sveti Martin na Muri, where Chriztel embraced a new chapter in her life.

Chriztel faced the challenge of learning a completely new language. With the help of her teacher, she found a creative way to learn—by immersing herself in the traditional međimurske popevke (Međimurje folk songs).

One song, in particular, “Raca plava,” captured her heart and sparked a deep love for Croatian traditional music.

Chriztel, who now speaks fluent Croatian, is continuing to pursue her musical dreams while also excelling academically. She is a student at the Music School in Varaždin, where she studies solo singing and solfeggio.

She is also an active member of her local church choir and the HKUD (Cultural Arts Society) of Sveti Martin na Muri, and frequently performs with the local majorettes.

Filipino contenders have consistently earned placements since the inception of the pageant in 2019, starting with the Philippines’ first delegate Mary Daena Resurreccion who finished in the Top 5.

In the 2024 competition, joining Wu and Doctor in the winners’ circle were first runner-up Meily Herlina from Indonesia, second runner-up Dtuga Pratilja from Serbia, and fourth runner-up Jacklyn Saddler from China.

Before Doctor’s proclamation as the Philippines’ official delegate to the 2024 Miss Eco Teen International pageant, Hanna Uyan was originally set to compete in the global tilt for teenagers.

Uyan represented the Filipino community in Southern California at the inaugural staging of The Miss Philippines Culture and Heritage Celebration, a sister search of the Miss Universe Philippines pageant, in October 2023.

She and the four finalists from the national search officially received their respective international pageant appointments in February this year. But in August, Doctor replaced her as this year’s Miss Eco Teen International bet by The Miss Philippines.

Doctor was the lone teenager among the semifinalists in the 2024 Miss Universe Philippines pageant held in May. The national competition also proclaimed a new set of queens for The Miss Philippines.

To this date, Roberta Tamondong remains to be the only Filipino contender to earn the Miss Eco Teen International crown. She won in the 2020 competition.

MANILA, Philippines — A 23-year-old Filipina won the United Nations’ Women’s International Network for Disaster Risk Reduction Rising Star award during the recent Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Pasay City.

Robyn Mijares, founder and executive director of Youth Uprising, a non-profit organization which provides free environmental and agricultural education to marginalized Filipino youth in public schools across the country, bested five other finalists from other countries.

The Philippines hosted the five-day international disaster event, which serves as the main platform in Asia and the Pacific in monitoring, reviewing and enhancing cooperation for the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 to 2030, the global blueprint for preventing and reducing disaster risks in the world’s disaster-prone regions.

Other finalists include Nayyab Ali from Pakistan; Nairwita Bandyopadhyay from India, Mediatrich Triani from Indonesia; Jewel Luti Leao Tuitama from New Zealand and Liva Shrestha from Nepal.

“Each story we’ve shared is not just a testament to resilience, it’s a call to action. This award is not only meant to recount their experiences, but to ignite change,” Mijares said in her speech.

She said that her group’s “Oh my, GARDEN: Grow Your Own Food Contest” served as a pioneering effort in response to the urgent food insecurity threat brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating the power of grassroots movements in addressing global challenges.

“A simple classroom assignment from a 19-year-old girl grew into a powerful movement to combat hunger – one of the slowest yet most persistent disasters we face on a day to day,” she added.

According to Mijares, the project highlights the critical need to empower the youth through sustainable agriculture, underscoring the importance of self-sufficiency and resilience in overcoming challenges.

Mijares also founded the Grow School Philippines, the first bamboo farm school located in Nasugbu, Batangas which provides free accessible environmental and agricultural programs to public schools across the Philippines.

She received a plaque and $7,500 cash prize.

Ilocano guard Aaron Ganal has made history as the first-ever Filipino to play in Spain’s Liga ACB, which is regarded as one of the strongest domestic leagues in the world alongside the NBA.

Ganal made his Liga ACB debut with the MoraBanc Andorra team during their 112-87 victory against Básquet Coruña on Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).

The 6-foot-1 guard played for nearly a minute and scored three points, successfully hitting three of his four free throw attempts for MoraBanc Andorra.

Ganal first signed a one-year deal with MoraBanc Andorra in August 2022 but did not see action in the Liga ACB. He returned to the team this year.

The 20-year-old guard previously played for FC Barcelona’s youth basketball team and was invited to join Spain’s Under-16 national team pool.

Gilas Pilipinas Youth Team official Enzo Flojo previously stated that Ganal considered playing for the Philippine team but did not go through with it, as he would have to renounce his Andorran citizenship.

“‪Would’ve been terrific to see him part of the Batang Gilas pool, but getting a Phi passport means he’d have to renounce his Andorran citizenship. Dual citizenship is forbidden in Andorran law,” Flojo wrote.

Ganal’s father, Bhoyet, was born and raised in Ilocos Norte and previously played as a naturalized player for the Andorran national basketball team.

Scientists have sent spacecraft to the dark side of the moon and landed rovers on Mars yet more than 80 percent of the ocean remains unexplored.

Filipino American student Samantha-Lynn Martinez wants to help unravel the mystery of the ocean and explore marine life and ecosystems. She will be one of 16 interns – chosen out of 400 applicants – to participate in the exploration of deep-sea habitats in the South Pacific.

Martinez will join the Ocean Exploration Trust – founded by Dr. Robert Ballard, who is known for discovering the wreck of the Titanic – aboard the research vessel E/V Nautilus.

The Ocean Exploration Trust and the Nautilus Exploration Program seek out new discoveries in geology, biology and archaeology while conducting scientific exploration of the seafloor.

It is a pioneer in ocean exploration using advanced technologies like remotely operated vehicles and seafloor mapping systems. Their expeditions are streamed live on NautilusLive.org.

“Very, very excited,” Martinez posted on Facebook. Scheduled this September, the ocean expedition will set a milestone for the University of Washington student who is eyeing a career in marine science.

In collaboration with the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa, the expedition aims to highlight STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and instill curiosity and innovation among young people worldwide.

Martinez is not only passionate about science, but she’s also an artist, working as a graphic designer and illustrator.  Her work has been featured by government organizations, including NOAA Fisheries and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Currently, Martinez is working with the Salish Sea School and the Pacific Mammal Research on various design projects.

In spite of her busy schedule, this Fil-Am teen finds time to honor her Filipino roots and serve the Fil-Am community.

Last year, she partnered with the Filipino Community of Seattle for the cultural event, “Pusit sa Pier,” where she shared her knowledge and showcased her creative side.

You may join Martinez on her exciting journey aboard E/V Nautilus by visiting NautilusLive.org.
