The Philippines marked its eight consecutive year as Asia’s Leading Dive Destination at the World Travel Awards (WTA) Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2026, held at CROSSROADS Maldives on Sunday (Sept. 27).

The country likewise secured five other major wins, including Asia’s Leading Beach Destination 2026 for the ninth time and Asia’s Leading Island Destination 2026 for the third consecutive year.

Boracay retained its title as Asia’s Leading Luxury Island Destination 2026 for the third straight year, while the Department of Tourism (DOT) was named Asia’s Leading Tourist Board 2026 for the fourth time.

The City of San Fernando, Pampanga earned the title of Asia’s Leading Cultural City Destination 2026, marking the Philippines’ first win in the said category. The recognition highlights the city’s rich heritage, traditions, crafts, culinary offerings, and festivals, including the Giant Lantern Festival.

“With the momentum from these recognitions, we want to further establish diving as one of the Philippines’ key tourism products in 2027. This means improving access and logistics to our dive destinations and strengthening promotions that showcase the exceptional marine and natural assets we have across the country. At the same time, we will continue working to enhance safety and security for both local and international travelers, while investing in the training and education of our tourism frontliners in our dive and beach destinations. Our goal is to make diving and other water-based activities safer, more accessible, and easier for travelers to experience, supported by more efficient services and better-connected destinations,” Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said.

Philippine tourism industry players also brought home nine Asia-level awards, led by the country’s flag carrier Philippine Airlines, named Asia’s Leading Cultural Airline. Savoy Hotel Manila was recognized as Asia’s Leading Airport Hotel, while Amanpulo and Discovery Primea were named Asia’s Leading Private Island Resort and Asia’s Leading Business Hotel, respectively. Other Philippine winners were Admiral Hotel Manila – MGallery, Asia’s Leading Design Hotel; Ascott Bonifacio Global City Manila, Asia’s Leading Serviced Apartments; City of Dreams Manila, Asia’s Leading Casino Resort; Fili Hotel Bridgetowne, Asia’s Leading New Luxury Hotel Development Project; and Okada Manila, Asia’s Leading Entertainment Resort.

Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards recognizes excellence across the global travel, tourism, and hospitality industries through regional and global awards. Regional winners advance to the WTA Grand Final, where they compete with winners from other regional heats for the World categories.

Local enterprise LIKHÂ is taking Filipino talent and craftsmanship to a world-class degree this year. The brand’s new Ella Hand-crocheted Bucket Bag is now officially a design under high-profile lifestyle brand Tory Burch, set to make a statement and a lasting impression on artisans and fashion connoisseurs worldwide.

LIKHÂ’s Ella Bucket Bag turns abaca straw into simple but stylish pieces that thoroughly capture the Philippines’ history and culture. The brand’s artisan partners have added a variety of details to the bag that highlight its intricate hand-knotted patterns, bringing a unique touch to its globally recognized story.

“For us, seeing the finished bag at Tory Burch is also about seeing the people behind it represented on a global stage,” the LIKHÂ team wrote on Instagram.

The Ella takes on a distinct form and rich color thanks to its twisted fibers, making it an ideal choice for casual city strolls and beach getaways. The bag’s success is a major step in the right direction, especially in fulfilling LIKHÂ’s long-term goals of preserving heritage craft, supporting sustainable designs and livelihoods, and bringing locally made goods to the global market.

It took LIKHÂ two and a half years to hone their craft as a team and create a bag that seamlessly blends style, convenience, and unapologetically Filipino elements. That’s why its international presence means everything to them and the brand’s founder, Natalie Llorente-Lim, who’s also a Tory Burch Foundation Fellow.

“Behind [the Ella’s] seemingly simple form are years of sampling, refining, problem-solving, and learning what matters most: the hand of the artisan,” LIKHÂ explained. “We’re proud to see the work of our artisan partners represented on this stage.”

The Ella Hand-crocheted Bucket Bag by LIKHÂ is now available in the U.S. at Tory Burch.

Ube conquered the Emirates

Is ube the new matcha? How this purple Filipino ingredient is taking over UAE

Sweet yam has become cafe staple for its distinctive flavour and striking colour

Hala Nasar
The National News (United Arab Emirates)
September 26, 2026

What goes into the making of a viral food trend? Is it the colour? Texture? Its versatility as an ingredient? Or is it a memorable flavour?

And what makes ube, a starchy yam root vegetable native to the Philippines, fit these criteria?

Ube, a starchy yam root vegetable native to the Philippines

Its vibrant purple shade is an obvious reason, but ube's popularity is also owing to its velvety texture and sweet flavour. Much like how matcha has made its way into practically every coffee shop and cafe in the UAE over the last few years, ube is now the ingredient being incorporated into every sweet treat recipe and hot drink order.

As a matcha lover, I set out to put its rival to the test, speaking to chefs behind the bakes. Here are some ways UAE eateries are incorporating ube into their menus – and my verdict.

Nina's Bakes

Christina Tamayo, the Filipina owner of Nina's Bakes, says the purple yam is connected to some of her best childhood memories.

“We put it in all our desserts, such as halo-halo, ice cream, leche flan and cakes. Everyone in our village planted them in their backyards.”

As its use becomes more prevalent in the UAE, Tamayo has folded it into her recipes, creating an ube and white chocolate chip cookie (Dh25).

Tamayo began by taking ube roots to make ube halaya, which has a jelly-like consistency. After boiling and mashing the yam, it takes about an hour of stirring to turn it into a smooth jam for filling.

The heart of the bright purple cookie is creamy – a blend of sweet and savoury that jumps between the distinct flavour of the yam and the sweet vanilla. The white chocolate chips are a pleasant addition.

“It’s pretty safe to say that the ube’s popularity is due in large part to its photogenic nature,” Tamayo says.

I love the rich and gooey texture of Nina's Bake's indulgent cookies, and the uber-jam centre is moreish.

Nette

Not satisfied with one viral food trend, Nette in Dubai has created an ube matcha drink (Dh36) in a colour combination straight out of Beetlejuice.

It's an unexpected duo, but I find it strangely comforting. The ube adds a sweetness, but that earthy taste remains, with neither feeling overpowering.

The French-Japanese restaurant also lists cloud ube (Dh36) on its drinks menu – adapted from the popular cloud matcha – which consists of coconut water topped with an ube and oat milk mixture to form a smooth cream. This is milder, more refreshing intro to the ube flavour.

Nette also offers two dessert options. First, its crinkle cookies with coconut cream cheese filling (Dh30). I appreciate the perfect cookie-to-cream ratio, although the creamy flavour overpowers the ube essence. It's enjoyable nonetheless and a great sharing option.

As its use becomes more prevalent in the UAE, Tamayo has folded it into her recipes, creating an ube and white chocolate chip cookie (Dh25).

The vibrant burnt Basque ube cheesecake (Dh50) feels smooth and melts in the mouth. The ube's flavour pairs really well with the coconut vanilla Chantilly cream, miso butterscotch sauce and toasted coconut flakes, making it one of my favourite ube-inspired dishes so far.

Nette's culinary director Craig Small says he saw ube becoming a popular trend long ago.

“To me, ube is purple gold – it has an incredible natural colour and flavour, but it also naturally contains anthocyanins – powerful plant pigments known for their antioxidant properties, along with fibre and other beneficial plant compounds,” Small says. “It has heritage, versatility and real nutritional value, and I think we’re going to see ube become a much bigger ingredient across the UAE.”

Al Barari, Dubai

Jun's

“It’s easy to use ube in simple desserts and drinks, but it can also be a little finicky,” says award-winning Chinese-Canadian chef Kelvin Cheung. “If you’re working with artificial ube flavouring or essence, it can be very powerful, so you have to use it carefully to ensure it doesn’t overpower the palate.”

Cheung, whose food is rooted in “third-culture cuisine”, prioritises collaborating with his Filipino team members “to create dishes that celebrate their culture, food and heritage” at his restaurant, Jun's, which has been ranked eighth among the Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Jun's ube menu includes an ube calamansi spritz, a gluten-free coconut ube pie, the signature Ube Kelvin cake made with brown-butter taro root spread, and ube flan cookies. After sampling several of those items, I notice that Cheung uses ube to magnify and complement each dish with a subtle rather than overpowering flavour.

The coconut ube pie (Dh55) offers comfort with familiar textures and memorable flavour combinations. The pie crust is not too thin nor too thick and the layers come together in harmony. The creamy coconut mousse hits first, followed by the toasted meringue, while the ube mousse is smooth and airy.

The ube calamansi spritz (Dh35) is a cool, refreshing summer drink. Both ube and calamansi oranges are native to the Philippines and they create a sweet and sour blend.

Lastly, the soft ube flan cookies (Dh30) are a sweet treat, combining chocolate and ube in every warm bite.

Cheung believes ube could become popular just like matcha on a global scale, especially as a caffeine-free drinks option.

“The region is always excited to embrace new flavours and dessert trends, and cafe culture is such a big part of life here. With its vibrant colour and unique taste, ube is the perfect ingredient to take over right now,” he says.

Cheung also highlights that beyond driving creativity and visually appealing dishes, viral ingredients can foster a new appreciation for culinary traditions.

“I only see positives when an ingredient rooted in a particular culture is given a global spotlight, because it encourages people to discover more about the cuisine it comes from,” he says.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced the 32-member class on Thursday during a news conference at Funko Hollywood on Hollywood Boulevard.

Scherzinger and Jo Koy were recognized in the Live Theatre/Live Performance category alongside Italian ballet star Roberto Bolle.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame, established in 1960, honors artists who have made significant contributions to the entertainment industry. Stretching along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, it features more than 2,800 terrazzo-and-brass stars recognizing achievements in motion pictures, television, recording, radio, live theatre/live performance and sports entertainment.

Honorees are chosen each year by the Walk of Fame Selection Committee from hundreds of nominations submitted by fans, studios, record labels and others in the entertainment industry. The selections are then ratified by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

“The Walk of Fame Selection Committee is proud to welcome the Class of 2027 to one of the most enduring symbols of achievement in entertainment,” selection committee chairman Peter Roth said in a statement. “These extraordinary individuals have each made a lasting impact on audiences around the world through their talent, creativity and dedication to their craft.”

Jo Koy

Jo Koy, who has long celebrated his Filipino heritage in his stand-up comedy, has become one of the world’s top-grossing comedians. His routines frequently draw on his experiences growing up with a Filipino mother and have helped bring Filipino culture to mainstream audiences worldwide.

The Class of 2027 also includes actors Pedro Pascal, Lisa Kudrow, Idris Elba, Kate Hudson and Adam Scott; recording artists Karol G, Sia, Linkin Park and Lil Wayne; and former NFL coach Jimmy Johnson, who will be honored in the Sports Entertainment category.

MANILA, Philippines — Three individuals of Filipino descent landed on the "2026 TIME100 Creators" list by Time magazine, a compilation of 100 content creators deemed to have "the most influential digital voices."

All three representatives — Niana Guerrero, Bretman Rock and Rachel Hofstetter (better known as Valkyrae) — were included in the list's Titans category.

Niana, the only one of the three based in the Philippines, is the most-followed Filipino on TikTok at nearly 47 million followers and her inclusion featured a write-up by Leslie Horn Peterson.

The writer shared how Niana went viral in 2017 as a 12-year-old dancing to "Despacito" and now has collaborated with international artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae, Lisa of Blackpink and Katseye led by Filipina Sophia Laforteza.

United States-based Bretman and Valkyrae, who is of Filipino and German descent, both had their write-ups done by Kara Nesvig.

Nesvig noted how Bretman's Instagram and TikTok feeds are filled with beauty content around the world, as well as nature scenes from his Hawaiian home.

Bretman made the shift from Vine to YouTube by keeping in touch with short- and long-form content and now the more down-to-earth side of his life.

"With hilarious videos about naming baby peacocks or applying false lashes to his chickens so they look more like him — not to mention the farmland video that won him the 2025 TikTok Video of the Year Award— Bretman's content is a reminder of how living in harmony with nature can make life more beautiful," Nesvig wrote.

Gaming icon Valkyrae, meanwhile, was praised for being a standout Twitch streamer in a male-dominated space, picking up millions of views in the last decade.

Valkyrae's influence has extended beyond gaming with her Hihi Studios media company, "Wine About It" podcast, music video appearances, and voice roles in animation.

Joining the three in the Titans category were Joe Rogan, IShowSpeed, Druski, Alex Cooper, Alan Chikin Chow, Markiplier, Mark Rober, Subway Takes' Kareem Rahma, Quenlin Blackwell, and cover star Alix Earle — many of whom were on last year's inaugural list.

Notable names in other categories were Mark Phillips, Whitney Leavitt, Lex Fridman and "Backrooms" director Kane Parsons.

Manny Pacquiao inducted to Hall of Fame

Manny Pacquiao enshrined to Boxing Hall of Fame

June 9, 2025

Manny Pacquiao was inducted into the prestigious International Boxing Hall of Fame earlier today in New York, USA.

Pacquiao, the lone eight-division champion in history, joined fellow Filipinos Pancho Villa, Gabriel "Flash" Elorde, and promoter Lope Sarreal.

"From the streets of General Santos, to the bright light of Las Vegas, to tonight at the International Boxing Hall of Fame. No shoes, no food, no chance, just a dream in my heart," Pacquiao wrote on his official Facebook page.

"I never imagined this moment, but by God’s grace, here we are. This is not just about boxing. It’s about faith. Family. Sacrifice. Purpose. It’s about every Filipino and every fan who believed in me, even when the doubters didn’t."

Pacquiao's, though, journey is not over. On July 16 at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, the 46-year-old Pacquiao will lace them up once more against WBC world welterweight champion Mario Barrios.

An underdog in the upcoming fight, Pacquiao is poised to break his own record of being the oldest welterweight champion in history should he overcome his lanky Mexican opponent.

"Today, on February 21, the Crystal Bears of the Generation 14plus Youth Jury and Prizes of the Generation International Jury, endowed by the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Agency for Civic Education), have been presented in Generation 14plus," Berlinale announced on its official social media pages Saturday (Manila time).

The Generation 14plus Youth Jury members — Nour Ibrahim, Zeynep Atay, Tyler Kurokhtin, Jil Baalmann and Rohan Yadav — selected "Sunshine" for the award.

Generation 14plus is a section of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) that focuses on films for audiences aged 14 and older. It showcases stories that explore themes relevant to teenagers and young adults, often addressing coming-of-age narratives, social issues and personal struggles.

On its website, the jury praised "Sunshine" for its "sensitive view on its modern and socially critical topic and its strong message. It touched us not only through the acting performances, but also with its dark, yet hopeful and empowering atmosphere, which the filmmakers created with their way of storytelling."

"It raises our awareness by confronting us with the reality of the social and political problems it addresses, which unfortunately still exist today. The film's balance of different moral perspectives and impressive stylistic elements creates an immersive reality that feels authentic and deeply moving," the jury continued.

"Nothing about it feels exaggerated or distant — it draws us in and enables us to experience the characters' inner conflicts in an inspiring way that stays with us long after we've finished watching. Whether or not viewers can directly identify with the issues it tackles, we believe this film will leave a lasting impact," they added.

"Sunshine" follows a young gymnast who discovers she is pregnant the week of the national tryouts. The film premiered on Sept. 13, 2024, at the Toronto International Film Festival and later screened at the 2025 Berlinale as part of the Generation 14plus section.

The film had a sold-out premiere at Berlinale.

"Director Antoinette Jadaone, along with actor Elijah Canlas and the team of 'Sunshine,' attended the film's packed screening at a 1,000-seat theater! They also held an engaging Q&A after more than a minute of applause at the end of the film. 'Sunshine' is competing at this year's Berlinale under the Generation 14 category!" Project 8 Projects shared on social media.

On Feb. 13, Racal attended the opening ceremony and the screening of "Das Licht," wearing a lime green chiffon gown designed by Jot Losa.

In addition to Racal, "Sunshine" stars Elijah Canlas, Xyriel Manabat, Jennica Garcia, Annika Co and Meryll Soriano.

PH pancit canton brand one of NY Times top ramen list

Local pancit canton brand makes it to New York Times' Top 16 ramen list

Camille Santiago
Philstar Life
06 February 2025

Pancit canton is one of the ultimate Filipino comfort foods—perfect for those 3 a.m. cravings, school baon, or just a quick and tasty merienda. We love it in all its forms, from the tangy calamansi flavor to the chilimansi version. And guess what? The New York Times recognized its deliciousness, too!

In an article published under its Wirecutter section in January, Lucky Me! Pancit Canton Kalamansi flavor is one of the 16 best instant noodles, alongside Indomie's Mie Goreng and Nongshim's Neoguri Spicy Seafood.

"Of all the noodles we’ve tested, the Pancit Canton Kalamansi disappeared from the bowl the fastest," wrote New York Times supervising editor Marilyn Ong.

While noting that the serving is "small," the writer praised the noodle variant for its "dry seasoning, soy sauce, and oil packets" that "combine to produce a nuanced blend of light soy and fresh, aromatic citrus."

She described the noodles as skinny and "extra-curly," which gave it almost a "fluffy feel."

"I definitely called them 'cute' while eating them," the description read.

Ong "warned" that a serving is enough as it comes in smaller packs. "Be warned it may take more than a pack to satisfy," she said.

She said the list was completed by a rotating panel of taste-testers on Wirecutter’s kitchen team, who tried over 45 ramen varieties since 2020. Ong said that the items that they tried were recommended by cookbook authors, ramen reviewers, ramen-shop owners, and the president of Sun Noodle.

"Ultimately, we picked the highest-quality or most-compelling ones—noodles with the chewy or silky textures they promise, and broths or sauces with a good balance of flavors and that taste surprisingly similar to freshly made versions of the dishes they invoke," the writer said.

Lucky Me! Pancit Canton comes in five flavors: Original, Kalamansi, Chilimansi, Sweet and Spicy, and Extra Hot Chili.
