Mikee Romero breaks into Top 25 of World Polo ranking

Mikee Romero breaks into Top 25 of World Polo ranking

FLORIDA, USA — In a moment that will be etched in the annals of Philippine sports history, businessman, lawmaker, and sportsman Mikee Romero has galloped into greatness—becoming the first Filipino to break into the Top 25 of the World Polo Tour (WPT) amateur rankings.

Romero now stands at World Rank No. 24, with 110 WPT points earned through a stunning debut at the 2025 Gauntlet of Polo, the most prestigious and demanding polo series in the world.

With this feat, he not only becomes the highest-ranked Filipino in WPT history but also surpasses Thailand’s Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha and Brunei’s Mateen Bolkiah to become Southeast Asia’s top amateur polo player.

The Gauntlet of Polo—often called the “Olympics of Polo”—is held at the National Polo Center in Florida and comprises three iconic tournaments: the C.V. Whitney Cup, the USPA Gold Cup, and the U.S. Open Polo Championship.

For more than a century, this hallowed turf has been the playground of Argentine, American, and European titans.

But in 2025, the thunder of Filipino hoofbeats broke through the silence, rewriting history in a sport once thought out of reach for Southeast Asia.

“It still feels surreal,” Romero said.

“To be among the Top 25 is a huge honor—but it’s more than a personal milestone. This is a triumph for every Filipino who dares to dream, for a nation that never had a place on this field—until now.”

Romero’s GlobalPort Polo Team delivered one of the Gauntlet’s most unexpected and inspiring runs.

It toppled global powerhouses La Dolfina/Tamera and Park Place—teams that eventually claimed the series’ top honors.

GlobalPort surged to the semifinals of the C.V. Whitney Cup, came within striking distance in the USPA Gold Cup, and fell heartbreakingly short in the US Open quarterfinals, losing 11–10 to LaDolfina/Catamount after leading by a goal with just 80 seconds remaining.

Yet the campaign was more than just wins and losses.

It was a mission of national pride. Romero and his team planted the Philippine flag deep into the heart of elite polo territory.

Along the way, they also secured second place in the USPA Bronze Cup and captured the Sterling Cup—further cementing their legitimacy on the global stage.

“For us, it wasn’t just about winning—it was about belonging,” Romero declared.

“Belonging to the world stage. And I believe we’ve earned that right.”

The WPT ranks players based on their performance in the most competitive tournaments around the globe.

For an Asian player—let alone a Filipino—to break into its upper echelon is almost unheard of. Romero’s rise signals a bold new chapter, shattering polo’s colonial boundaries and opening the gates to new cultures, new contenders, and a new era.

While Russian banker Andrey Borodin currently tops the amateur rankings with 509 points, Romero’s presence just a few tiers below is nothing short of groundbreaking.

On the professional side, Argentine legends Adolfo Cambiaso Jr. and Adolfo Cambiaso Sr. remain atop the leaderboard, while GlobalPort’s Bartolome “Barto” Castagnola, one of the tournament’s breakout stars, ranks No. 6 globally.

Romero’s journey from the halls of Congress to the fields of Florida is the stuff of modern folklore.

As he completes his third and final term as Congressman under the 1PACMAN Party-list, he now leads a different crusade—not in politics, but in polo—carrying the hopes of 110 million Filipinos with every swing of the mallet.

“This is just the beginning,” Romero said. “

We are no longer just spectators—we are players in the arena. And I promise you, the Filipino will ride again.”

Broadcast giant GMA Network reaffirmed its global excellence in producing world-class content that resonates with international audiences, bringing home 3 World Medals for the Philippines at the 2025 New York Festivals TV & Film (NYF) Awards–including another prestigious Gold medal for "The Atom Araullo Specials (TAAS)."

For the fourth consecutive year, The Atom Araullo Specials earned the World Gold Medal, this time in the Documentary: National Affairs category for its powerful episode "Pogoland." Aired in 2024, the documentary hosted by Atom Araullo delved into the vast, deep, and intricate world of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), offering viewers a deep and nuanced look into this controversial industry.

The Atom Araullo Specials also won back-to-back-to-back Gold Medals in the Documentary: Social Issues category for "Batas Bata" (Child's Game) in 2024, "Mata sa Dilim" (Eye in the Dark) in 2023, and "Munting Bisig" in 2022.

Aside from Gold, the Silver and Bronze medals were also won by GMA Public Affairs.

Earning a Silver medal was the multi-awarded and highly-acclaimed film "Firefly," which won in the Films: Feature Films category. Produced by GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs, Firefly previously emerged as the runaway winner at the inaugural Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) in Hollywood, California, taking home the highly coveted Best Picture honor. Shown in 2024, the film also dominated the 49th Metro Manila Film Festival.

The Philippines' most awarded news magazine program "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS)" added another laurel to its growing list of international accolades, taking home the Bronze medal for its episode "Minahan sa Homonhon Island" (Nickel and Dime: The Cost of Mining in Homonhon Island) in the Documentary: Environment & Ecology category. The episode featured the devastating effects of large-scale mining in Homonhon Island in Guian, Eastern Samar, which sparked discussions online as host Jessica Soho went to Guiuan to personally investigate the issue.

Equally giving the country prestige are "24 Oras" and "Lost Sabungeros," which earned Finalist certificates in their respective categories. GMA Integrated News' flagship newscast "24 Oras" was conferred with a Finalist Certificate for its special coverage titled "Super Typhoon Carina (Typhoon Gaemi) and Habagat (Southwest Monsoon)."

The recognition celebrates 24 Oras' exceptional journalism and public service as it delivered timely, accurate, and life-saving information to millions of Filipinos during one of the most destructive weather events in 2024. GMA Integrated News mobilized its reporters on the ground, integrated real-time data, and provided vital updates through multiplatform coverage. The program served as a critical lifeline for communities in distress, highlighted GMA Integrated News' continued excellence in disaster reporting to keep the public informed and safe, and its standing as the most trusted news organization in the Philippines.

Completing the recognitions for GMA Network was "Lost Sabungeros," which secured a Finalist certificate in the Documentary: Investigative Journalism category. Directed by Bryan Brazil, the GMA Public Affairs' first-ever investigative documentary tried to shed light on the disappearances of over 30 sabungeros (cockfighters) who have been abducted in various incidents since 2022.

Celebrating the world's best since 1957, the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards honors creative excellence and mastery of craft in all lengths and forms. This year's roster of shortlists included a diverse range of engaging primetime entertainment, documentaries, investigative journalism, sports coverage, promos, streaming media, and brand image films.

GMA Network has consistently led the Philippines' presence at the New York Festivals, garnering the most nominations and awards for the country year after year.

The Philippines earned two wins in one night after Krishan Pauline Alerre and Patricia Anne Nichole Bangug respectively emerged as this year’s Miss Aura International and Miss Orient Tourism Global titleholders.

Alerre competed at the Miss Aura International finals night held in Turkey on Friday, May 23, and stood out in the dance show, swimsuit, evening gown, and question-and-answer segments.

During the “intelligence round,” Alerre was asked, “They say the future is female. If that’s true, what kind of future do you believe she will create?”

The Kapampangan lass answered, “I believe female can be a future and she can create a world where she can empower others; a world driven by empathy, equality and innovation, and a future where purpose guides progress.”

“But after all, I believe, regardless of gender, they can be a future as long as they have the willingness to create an aura-mazing impact globally,” she added.

On her Instagram page on Saturday, May 21, Alerre said winning the international competition “still feels like a dream.”

“Winning Miss Aura International 2025 has me floating on cloud 9!” she exclaimed.

“I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and love. Thank you to everyone who believed in me and supported this journey,” she said. “This crown is not just mine—it’s for you everyone. Proud to bring this honor home!”

Alerre is the second Filipino beauty queen to have won the title, following Alexandra Faith Garcia in 2021.

Bangug, meanwhile, bested delegates from all over the world in the inaugural edition of the Miss Orient Tourism Global pageant held in Malaysia also on Friday.

During the question-and-answer round, Bangug showed off her wit as she answered the question: “As a tourism ambassador and potential titleholder of the Miss Orient Tourism Global 2025, how would you balance carrying the crown and title while also representing the unique beauty and culture of your country to the world?”

“As Miss Orient Tourism Global, I am not just a representative. I am a movement,” she stated. “With every step I take, I carry the stories of my culture, the strength of my people, and a vision for a world where tourism uplifts, connects and transforms.”

“I will become a bridge that connects cultures, inspires understanding, and celebrates global unity. Becoming the titleholder and the representative of the Philippines is not actually a challenge. It is an honor. And I know that together with this organization, we can inspire everyone to promote our vibrant culture, our rich heritage and our warm hospitality. Because after all, the crown is not just a symbol. It is a responsibility, and I am ready to wear it with purpose, power and passion,” she said.

Aside from the crown, Bangug also bagged the competition’s best in national costume award.  /ra
